Siad Barre seized power in Somalia in 1969 and ruled through a military government until the civil war drove him out in 1991.

He promoted Somali nationalism and scientific socialism before aligning with the United States after breaking with the Soviet Union. His fall was followed by state collapse and factional warfare.
