Fon Language

Fon also known as Dahomean or Fongbé is a language spoken in Atlantique, Littoral and Zou departments in southern Benin, the Plateaux region(southern Togo) and some parts of Nigeria by the Fon people.

It belongs to the Gbe group of languages which also includes Adja, Éwé and Gen languages.

Fon language has approximately 3,500,000 native speakers.

Fon is an official language in Benin.

The language has 5 dialects; Agbome, Arohun, Gun, Gbekon and Kpase.

In Benin, speakers use a unique script called Gbékoun, created by Togbédji Adigbè. This script consists of 24 consonants and 9 vowels and is designed to transcribe all the languages spoken in Benin.
