The 1959 Nile Waters Agreement

The Nile Water Agreement of 1959 was a significant milestone in water allocation for Egypt and Sudan. As per the agreement, Egypt's water allocation was increased from 48 billion cubic meters to 55.5 billion cubic meters, while Sudan's allocation rose from 4 billion cubic meters to 18.5 billion cubic meters, with 10 billion cubic meters accounted for seepage and evaporation. The primary aim of the agreement was to support the construction of the Aswan High Dam while concurrently promoting trade and economic development in the region. The agreement also mandated that any increase in the average water yield should be shared equally between Egypt and Sudan. However, this neglected the water needs of other riparian states, including Ethiopia, which contributes over 80 percent of the Nile's water from its highlands. This set the stage for ongoing water disputes in the region, which continues to this day.
