Burkina Faso's Coup Crisis

In September 2015, Burkina Faso faced a failed coup attempt led by the Regiment of Presidential Security (RSP), a controversial military unit formed during President Blaise Compaoré's rule. They detained the government, including President Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida. This came after the 2014 uprising that ousted Compaoré, who had taken power in a 1987 coup after the assassination of Thomas Sankara.
The RSP took control of Ouagadougou, announcing a new junta led by General Gilbert Diendéré, citing objections to the transitional government's electoral law. They promised inclusive elections. However, their control was limited, facing protests, regional pressure, and opposition from the national army. President Kafando was reinstated on September 23, 2015, ending the coup attempt and restoring transitional governance.
