  • 2004 - Brenda Fassie, a South African singer, dies.
  • 1936 – Italy formally occupies Ethiopia after taking the capital Addis Ababa on May 5. 
  • 1973 – Tegla Loroupe, a Kenyan runner, is born.
  • 1994 - South Africa’s newly elected parliament chooses Nelson Mandela as the country’s first Black president.
  • 2001 - 126 football fans were killed in a stampede at Accra Stadium in Ghana.
  • 2009 - Jacob Zuma is sworn in as President of South Africa.
  • 2018 - Dam bursts after heavy rains near Solai, Kenya, killing at least 41.
